Contents
Overstimulation:
Babies can easily become overstimulated by what is happening around them. Too much sensory input or too much activity can make it difficult for them to settle down and rest. Monitor the amount of sensory stimulation your baby is getting each day and take breaks when needed.
Hunger:
Hunger can be a major factor in why your baby is fighting sleep. Make sure your baby has eaten enough before trying to put them to bed. (Keep in mind that overfeeding also can be a reason why your baby fights sleep)
Teething:
Teething can cause a lot of discomfort for your baby. If your baby is teething, give them something to chew on or a teething ring to help soothe them.
Separation Anxiety:
This is when your baby is anxious when you leave the room or they are not able to see you. It is a normal part of the development and can make it difficult for them to fall asleep. Comfort your baby with a soothing voice, a gentle touch, and plenty of reassurance.
Illness:
If your baby is not feeling well, it can be difficult for them to settle down for sleep. Discomforts such as acid reflux or Colic might be the reason that keeps your baby awake. Make sure to monitor your baby for signs of illness and seek medical attention if needed.
New Environment:
If your baby is in a new environment, like a vacation or a new house, it can be difficult for them to adjust and settle down for sleep. Stick to their normal bedtime routine and provide plenty of comfort and reassurance to comfort your baby till they fall asleep.
Developmental Milestones:
As your baby grows and develops, it may become more aware of its surroundings and have a harder time settling down for sleep. At certain ages, they will tend to be more alert and will have a difficult time falling asleep. This is normal and will pass with time.
By understanding the common reasons why your baby may be fighting sleep, you can help them get the rest they need and reduce the frustration for both of you. But if you cannot find a reason why your baby fights sleep and you feel like he is not getting an adequate amount of rest for a prolonged period of time, seek your pediatrician’s advice as soon as possible.
